Phylogenetic structure of understorey annual and perennial plant species reveals opposing responses to aridity in a Mediterranean biodiversity hotspot

چکیده

Aridity is a critical driver of the diversity and composition plant communities. However, how aridity influences phylogenetic structure functional groups (i.e. annual perennial species) far less understood than its effects on species richness. As perennials have to endure stressful conditions during summer drought, as opposed annuals that avoid it, they may be subjected stronger environmental filtering. In contrast, more susceptible interannual climatic variability. Here we studied components understorey communities, along regional gradient in Mediterranean drylands. Specifically, asked: (1) How do richness (S) (PS) communities respond aridity? (2) What contribution other topo-edaphic variables predicting S PS for both components? (3) does taxonomic turnover vary with spatial distances? We assessed annuals' perennials' richness, at deep shallow levels, distances. found no relationship between aridity, whereas showed unimodal pattern. The contrasting responses negatively correlated variables. clustering intermediate-to-higher levels annuals, lower perennials. Both distance rather suggesting adaptation local factors. Overall, our results show decoupling response Our findings significant implications land management strategies under climate change.

Life history variation in an annual plant under two opposing environmental constraints along an aridity gradient

Environmental gradients represent an ideal framework for studying adaptive variation in the life history of plant species. However, on very steep gradients, largely contrasting conditions at the two gradient ends often limit the distribution of the same species across the whole range of environmental conditions. Here, we study phenotypic variation in a winter annual crucifer Biscutella didyma p...

Special Section: Balancing Conservation and Development to Preserve China’s Biodiversity Seed plant phylogenetic diversity and species richness in conservation planning within a global biodiversity hotspot in eastern Asia

One of the main goals of conservation biology is to understand the factors shaping variation in biodiversity across the planet. This understanding is critical for conservation planners to be able to develop effective conservation strategies. Although many studies have focused on species richness and the protection of rare and endemic species, less attention has been paid to the protection of th...

Disentangling environmental correlates of vascular plant biodiversity in a Mediterranean hotspot

We determined the environmental correlates of vascular plant biodiversity in the Baetic-Rifan region, a plant biodiversity hotspot in the western Mediterranean. A catalog of the whole flora of Andalusia and northern Morocco, the region that includes most of the Baetic-Rifan complex, was compiled using recent comprehensive floristic catalogs. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and detrended cor...

Intensifying postfire weather and biological invasion drive species loss in a Mediterranean-type biodiversity hotspot.

Prolonged periods of extreme heat or drought in the first year after fire affect the resilience and diversity of fire-dependent ecosystems by inhibiting seed germination or increasing mortality of seedlings and resprouting individuals. This interaction between weather and fire is of growing concern as climate changes, particularly in systems subject to stand-replacing crown fires, such as most ...

Phylogenetic analysis of HSP70 gene of Aspergillus fumigatus reveals conservation intra-species and divergence inter-species

Aspergillus fumigatus is a saprophyte fungus, widely spread in a variety of ecologicalniches and the most prevalent aspergilli responsible for human and animal invasiveaspergillosis. The first step to develop novel and efficient therapies is the identificationand understanding of the key tolerance and virulence factors of pathogens. The mainfocus of the present study is to perform the similarit...
